PM Modi in Japan: AI, Semiconductors and Bullet Trains Top the Summit Agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a two-day visit to Japan, responding to an invitation from Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The visit aims to attend the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. PM Modi highlighted the trip as a chance to bolster India's national interests and enhance regional and global peace and security.

Upon his arrival in Tokyo, PM Modi expressed enthusiasm about engaging with PM Ishiba and other leaders. He mentioned that this visit would deepen existing partnerships and explore new collaboration opportunities. This marks his first solo trip to Japan in seven years.

Focus on Economic Partnerships

The summit will primarily focus on strengthening economic and investment ties between India and Japan. Cultural connections between the two nations are also expected to be enhanced during this visit. Members of the Indian diaspora in Tokyo gathered to welcome PM Modi, while Japanese artists prepared cultural performances for the occasion.

PM Modi's agenda includes fostering a Special Strategic and Global Partnership with Japan, which has seen steady progress over the past 11 years. He emphasized advancing cooperation in emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and semiconductors.

Potential Investment Pledges

A Bloomberg report suggests that PM Modi might secure investment pledges worth $68 billion during his stay in Japan. An economic security pact focusing on semiconductors, critical minerals, and AI may also be signed during this visit.

There is speculation about a potential agreement for manufacturing next-generation E10 Shinkansen bullet trains in India. This project is compared to the Maruti Suzuki joint venture from four decades ago but is noted for its larger scale and strategic significance.

Cultural Engagements

During his visit, PM Modi met with members of the Indian community in Tokyo who had eagerly awaited his arrival. He was "deeply touched" by their warm reception and praised their dedication to maintaining cultural roots while contributing significantly to Japanese society.

In addition to meeting PM Shigeru Ishiba, PM Modi is expected to meet governors of various Japanese prefectures. After concluding his Japan visit, he will head to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, where he plans to meet Xi Jinping on August 31.

The visit provides an opportunity not only for economic discussions but also for strengthening civilizational bonds that connect people from both countries. The focus remains on expanding economic ties while exploring new avenues of technological collaboration.
