PM Modi Flags Off Delhi-Meerut RRTS: Namo Bharat Trains To Cut Travel Time To 40 Minutes
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 13-kilometre section of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor on Sunday. The new stretch connects Sahibabad in Uttar Pradesh to New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, marking the arrival of Namo Bharat trains in the national capital.
During the ceremony, PM Modi took a ride on a Namo Bharat train from Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar, interacting with children and passengers onboard. The inauguration expands the RRTS network, offering faster and more efficient travel between Delhi and Meerut.
The 55-kilometre corridor from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South is now operational, featuring 11 stations. Passenger services are set to begin at 5 pm, with trains running every 15 minutes. Fares for the journey range from Rs 150 for a standard coach to Rs 225 for a premium coach.
This follows the opening of a 17-kilometre priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot on 20 October last year.
The newly launched section includes a six-kilometre underground stretch, featuring the Anand Vihar station. This major transit hub connects the Blue and Pink Lines of the Delhi Metro, a railway station, and a bus terminal. It also marks the first underground operation for Namo Bharat trains in Delhi.
New Ashok Nagar station offers an interchange with the Blue Line of the Delhi Metro, enhancing connectivity. With this addition, travel time between New Ashok Nagar and Meerut South is reduced to under 40 minutes, cutting travel time by a third.
The Namo Bharat corridor spans 82 kilometres, linking Sarai Kale Khan in New Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut. It features 16 RRTS stations and nine Meerut Metro stations, providing a transformative regional transit experience for commuters.
