During his two-day visit to Kuwait, PM Modi addressed the Indian community at the Sheikh Saad Al Abdullah Sports Complex. This event, named 'Hala Modi,' marked a historic moment as he became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Kuwait in 43 years. His presence was warmly received by the Indian diaspora.

"People from North, West, East and South, who speak different languages are here- 'lekin sab ke dil me ek hi goonj hai - Bhatrat Mata Ki Jai," PM Modi stated during his speech. He expressed feeling a strong sense of belonging and warmth upon arriving in Kuwait just hours earlier.

Indian Community's Contribution

PM Modi praised the Indian community for enriching Kuwait with their skills and talents. He acknowledged their role in making India a leader in remittances globally. "You have filled Kuwait's canvas with colours of Indian skills, mixed essence of India's talent, tech & tradition," he said.

Kuwait hosts around 9 lakh Indians, making up 30% of its workforce. Overall, Indians constitute 21% of Kuwait's population. The Prime Minister highlighted how Kuwaiti leaders often commend the Indian community for their contributions to the nation.

Economic Ties Between India and Kuwait

Kuwait ranks among India's top trading partners with bilateral trade reaching USD 10.47 billion in 2023-24. The country is also India's sixth-largest crude supplier, fulfilling 3% of India's energy requirements. These economic ties underscore the importance of their relationship.

For the first time, Indian exports to Kuwait hit USD 2 billion. Additionally, investments from the Kuwait Investment Authority in India surpassed USD 10 billion. This growth reflects strengthening economic bonds between the two nations.

Historical Relations

The relationship between India and Kuwait dates back to pre-oil times when maritime trade was crucial for Kuwait's economy. Until 1961, the Indian rupee was legal tender in Kuwait, symbolising deep economic and cultural connections that continue today.

Diplomatic relations were officially established in 1961 when India appointed a trade commissioner to represent its interests in Kuwait. These longstanding ties have fostered mutual respect and cooperation over decades.

The Prime Minister's visit highlights the enduring friendship between India and Kuwait, built on shared history and growing economic collaboration. As both nations continue to strengthen their partnership, they look forward to further enhancing their ties across various sectors.
