Piyush Goyal Addresses Lok Sabha On Impact Of US Tariffs On India's Trade Relations

Union Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal assured that the central government will safeguard India's national interests. This statement came after US President Donald Trump declared a 25% tariff on India, citing New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil and weapons. Goyal emphasized that the government is evaluating the impact of these tariffs.

In the Lok Sabha, Goyal highlighted ongoing discussions between India and the US for a "balanced and mutually beneficial" Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). Initiated in March, both nations aim to finalize the first phase by October or November this year. The talks are crucial given the recent tariff announcement.

US Tariff Announcement

On Wednesday, Trump announced a 25% tariff on India starting August 1. He made this declaration on 'Truth Social', pointing out the significant trade deficit with India. Despite calling India a "friend", he criticized its ties with Moscow and its decision to buy Russian oil during the Ukraine conflict.

India stands as the largest purchaser of Russian oil after China. Trump's tariff decision comes amid ongoing trade negotiations with India. He remarked that India imposes some of the highest tariffs globally, which remains a concern for the US.

Details of Tariff Implementation

Goyal detailed that on April 2, 2025, an executive order was issued by Trump regarding reciprocal tariffs. A baseline duty of 10% was effective from April 5, 2025. With this baseline, a total tariff of 26% was set for India. Initially scheduled for April 9, 2025, this additional country-specific tariff was extended until August 1, 2025.

Trump expressed his views outside the White House on Wednesday. "India was one of the highest tariff nations globally," he stated. He mentioned tariffs reaching up to 175%, comparing them to Canada's high tariffs but emphasizing India's position as one of the top.
