Passenger In Seat 11A Survives Air India Crash, Recalls Trouble Began Just 30 Seconds After Takeoff

In one of India's deadliest aviation disasters, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating as flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, 2025. The aircraft, carrying 242 people including passengers and crew, went down within minutes of departing Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The crash claimed the lives of at least 241 individuals, with only one confirmed survivor.

A Single Survivor: Seat 11A

The only known survivor of the crash is 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin. He was seated in seat 11A, a window seat located in the first row of the economy class section, directly behind business class on the port (left) side of the aircraft. His seat position, close to the front of the plane, is believed to have contributed to his survival.

Ramesh, speaking from his hospital bed to the Hindustan Times, said the plane experienced trouble just seconds after takeoff.

"Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly," he said. Despite suffering injuries to his chest, eyes, and foot, he managed to walk after the crash. He recounted waking up amid wreckage and lifeless bodies, running until he was helped into an ambulance. His brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, was also on the flight but seated elsewhere; he remains missing and is presumed dead.

Crash Scene and Sequence

The crash took place just outside the airport perimeter as the aircraft failed to gain sufficient altitude and struck a residential building-a doctors' hostel affiliated with BJ Medical College. The aircraft had been fully loaded with fuel for the long-haul flight to London, which resulted in an intense fire following the impact and made rescue operations especially difficult.

Before the crash, the pilot reportedly issued a mayday call, suggesting an emergency situation was unfolding rapidly after takeoff.

Investigation and Response

Emergency teams continue to work at the crash site to recover bodies, identify victims, and provide support to affected families. Authorities are also evaluating whether there were casualties among residents of the hostel struck by the aircraft.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Aviation authorities are examining data from the aircraft's black boxes, fuel system, and maintenance history to determine what led to the catastrophic failure.

Loss of a Prominent Political Leader

Among the 241 confirmed dead is former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. His death was officially confirmed by the Gujarat government. Rupani's passing marks a significant loss for the state and for Indian politics at large.

This tragedy has prompted calls for a thorough investigation into not just this flight, but also broader concerns around aircraft maintenance and aviation safety protocols.
