Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived Puducherry on Sunday, to participate in the golden jubilee celebrations of nearby Auroville International township, a day after he inaugurated the pet scheme of Tamil Nadu's former chief minister, J Jayalalithaa.
Addressing the gathering, Modi said,''I have come to Puducherry after a long span of time. I feel lucky to be here.''
''Puducherry has all resources & will power but why is its development not up to the mark? Why is it not number one? Are women & youth getting opportunities to move ahead? Are the industries prospering here? Parties who governed Puducherry, did injustice to people here,'' PM Modi said.
Earlier in the day, addressing at Auroville's 50th anniversary celebrations, Modi said,''It is important today to remember the vast extent of action and thought of Shri Aurobindo. A man of action, a philosopher, a poet, there were so many facets to his character. And each of them was dedicated to the good of the nation and humanity.''
''Auroville brought together men, women, young, old, cutting across boundaries & identities. Auroville's Charter was handwritten in French by Divine Mother herself. The Mother set 5 high principles for Auroville,'' MOdi said at Auroville Foundation on its Golden Jubilee Week.
''India has always allowed mutual respect & co-existence of different religions & cultures. India is home to the age old tradition of Gurukul, where learning isn't confined to classrooms. Auroville too has developed as place of un-ending & life-long education,'' PM further said.
Meanwhile, security had been stepped up at all places that the Prime Minister would visit and also at the helipad where he would address the public meeting, police said.
