The upgraded PAN 2.0 system introduces a free upgraded PAN card for all citizens, which will feature a QR code for improved security and a unified portal for easier access to services.

Crucially, there will be no change to existing PAN numbers. Instead, citizens will receive free upgraded cards featuring the latest advancements, which will be delivered directly to their addresses. As of now, over 78 crore PAN cards have been issued in India, with 98% allocated to individual users.
