Governor RN Ravi Voices Concern Over Dalit Plight in Tamil Nadu Amid DMK Response
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi recently voiced his distress over the discrimination faced by Dalits in the state, describing some incidents as deeply troubling. His remarks were made during an event at Raj Bhavan to honour B R Ambedkar's birth anniversary. Ravi highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by Dalits, questioning if Ambedkar's vision for India has been realised.

Ravi emphasised that despite Ambedkar's significant contributions, he faced humiliation in his lifetime. "Ambedkar suffered immensely in his personal life, yet he bore no sense of vindictiveness or revenge," Ravi stated. He noted that Ambedkar was often remembered only during elections for political gains, which he described as ingratitude.
Discrimination and Social Justice
The Governor expressed concern over the continued discrimination against Dalits, especially in Tamil Nadu, a state known for advocating social justice. He cited incidents where Dalits were attacked for wearing slippers or riding motorbikes, and even cases of human excreta found in water tanks. These stories, according to Ravi, are not isolated but indicative of a larger issue.
Ravi also pointed out that crimes against Dalits and women from the community are on the rise. He mentioned that the conviction rate for such crimes in Tamil Nadu is significantly lower than the national average. "These are facts—not political statements," he asserted, urging for introspection and action to address these injustices.
Political Reactions and Criticism
In response to Ravi's comments, Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiyaan criticised the Governor's claims as falsehoods. Chezhiyaan argued that similar atrocities occur in other states, including Bihar, where the government relies on BJP support. He questioned Ravi's authority to comment on Tamil Nadu when issues persist in his native state.
Chezhiyaan also referenced statistics from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), indicating that BJP-ruled states have higher rates of atrocities against Dalits. He challenged Ravi on whether he had addressed controversial remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah about Ambedkar.
Ambedkar's Legacy and Call for Action
Ravi urged a reflection on Ambedkar's dreams for India, questioning if they have been fulfilled. He stressed that the plight of Dalits is not merely a political issue but a human and social one. "We must wake up and take responsibility," he said, calling for genuine efforts to build a just and equal society as envisioned by Ambedkar.
The Governor concluded by stating that fulfilling Ambedkar's dream is the true tribute to him. He called for honesty and gratitude towards Ambedkar's contributions, highlighting the need for societal change to ensure justice and dignity for all citizens.
