Gopinath Swain: A Living Legend of Krishna Leela

Among the awardees, Gopinath Swain stands out as a remarkable figure. At the age of 105, he has devoted his life to the preservation and promotion of Krishna Leela, a traditional art form that holds a special place in Odisha's cultural tapestry. Hailing from the Ganjam district, Swain comes from a family of Krishna Leela performers, and his musical journey began at the tender age of five.

Swain's unwavering commitment to traditional techniques and improvisational methods has breathed new life into Krishna Leela, creating a bridge between the past and present. His repertoire includes five ancient ragas – Dakhinasri, Chinta Desakhya, Todi Bhatiari, Bhatiari, and Kumbha Kamodi – which he has mastered and passed on to hundreds of disciples.

Bhagabat Padhan: Preserving the Dance of Mahadev

Another notable recipient is Bhagabat Padhan, an 85-year-old exponent of Sabda Nrutya, a folk dance form that originated in the Bargarh district of western Odisha. Padhan has dedicated over five decades of his life to preserving and popularizing this dance form, which is considered the dance of Mahadev (Lord Shiva).

Through his tireless efforts, Padhan has played a pivotal role in sustaining this dance form, training more than 600 dancers and ensuring its continued relevance in contemporary times. Despite facing financial challenges during his early years as a primary school teacher in the 1960s, Padhan never wavered in his devotion to his art.
