Ajit Pawar Criticises Opposition Leaders for Contradicting Themselves on Badlapur Sexual Assault Case

Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, criticised Opposition leaders for their inconsistent stance on the Badlapur sexual assault case. The accused, Akshay Shinde, was killed by police after he seized a policeman's gun and fired, injuring an officer. This incident happened while Shinde was being transported from Taloja Jail to Badlapur in Thane district. The police claimed they acted in self-defence.

Pawar Critiques Opposition on Badlapur Case

Opposition's Contradictory Stance

Initially, Opposition leaders demanded capital punishment for Shinde, citing insecurity for women in the state. However, after his death in police firing, they began questioning the police's account. Pawar pointed out this contradiction during a speech to Nationalist Congress Party workers. He noted that the Opposition's sole agenda seems to be blaming the government for every issue.

Protests erupted in Badlapur last month following Shinde's arrest for allegedly sexually assaulting two minor girls at a school. Pawar mentioned these protests while discussing the Opposition's actions. He emphasised that maintaining communal harmony is crucial, especially with ongoing agitations by Maratha and Dhangar communities seeking reservations.

Call for Communal Harmony

Pawar urged restraint in language and actions, indirectly referring to BJP MLA Nitesh Rane's provocative remarks against a religious community. AIMIM leader Imtiaz Jaleel led a rally to Mumbai demanding action against Rane. Jaleel returned after submitting memorandums to officials at Mumbai's border.

Pawar highlighted that some individuals make statements to gain political advantage and boost their self-importance. He stressed that democracy allows freedom of expression but warned against its misuse. He reiterated that the law applies equally to everyone without exception.

Efforts to Resolve Quota Issues

The Mahayuti government is actively working towards resolving quota issues, according to Pawar. The government remains optimistic about finding solutions for these concerns. Maratha quota leader Manoj Jarange and OBC leader Laxman Hake are both on hunger strikes, advocating for their communities' demands.

Pawar concluded by reaffirming the government's commitment to addressing these challenges and ensuring fairness for all communities involved.
