Assam Opposition Brands Kejriwal's Arrest as 'Murder of Democracy'
In a recent turn of events that has stirred the political landscape of India, opposition parties in Assam have vocally criticized the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, labeling it as an aggressive move by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and equating it to a "murder of democracy." The incident has sparked a wave of condemnation from various political quarters, with leaders asserting that this act will have significant repercussions in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Kejriwal, aged 55, found himself in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) late Thursday night. This development came shortly after the Delhi High Court declined to offer him protection from any coercive actions by the agency. The arrest is linked to an excise policy-related money laundering case, placing the AAP national convenor at the center of a controversial legal battle.
Akhil Gogoi, president of Raijor Dal and an MLA, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express his disapproval of the arrest. Gogoi, who shares a close bond with Kejriwal stemming from their days as RTI activists, described the action as a "barbaric act" by the BJP, aimed at silencing opposition voices ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. He called upon opposition forces across the country to unite and support the Delhi chief minister in what he sees as a fight to save democracy.
Ripun Bora, president of Assam TMC, echoed Gogoi's sentiments, deeming the arrest politically motivated and detrimental to democratic principles. Bora's message on X highlighted his strong condemnation of the BJP government's actions and hinted at a collective response from the people in the forthcoming polls.
Bhaben Choudhury, AAP Assam chief, suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's fear of Kejriwal's growing influence prompted the arrest. He emphasized that this move by the BJP only demonstrates AAP's emerging threat to their political dominance. Choudhury remains optimistic about AAP's prospects, vowing to intensify their campaign efforts across India.
The collective outcry from opposition leaders in Assam reflects a broader concern over political freedom and democracy in India. With accusations of using central agencies to target political rivals, the BJP faces scrutiny over its governance tactics. As the Lok Sabha elections approach, this incident may indeed shape voter sentiment and influence the political landscape in unforeseen ways.
