Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, popularly referred to as the Bill on "One Nation, One Election" on Tuesday.

This for wider consultations underscores the government's intent to a broad spectrum of insights before moving forward. The Joint Committee, which tasked with scrutinizing the proposed amendment is expected to be formed reflecting the proportionate of different political factions within the Parliament. Given its numerical superiority, the Bharatiya Janata (BJP) is poised to secure the committee's chairmanship along with a substantial representation, highlighting the party's influential role in the legislative process.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to participate in the debate. This committee, formerly led by ex-president Ram Nath Kovind, recommended phased approach to implementing simultaneous elections.

The proposal for simultaneous elections received a nod from the Union Cabinet last week, a step towards altering the electoral landscape of India. However, the Cabinet has, for the time being, deferred the decision on aligning local body elections with this new electoral timetable.

Meghwal is expected to articulate the necessity of extensive deliberations with both lawmakers and the public regarding the bill, reinforcing the call for its referral to the Joint Committee. Upon the bill's introduction, the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, will request parties to nominate members for this special panel.
