Odisha Election Drama: Leaders Quit Parties Over Denied Poll Tickets

In a significant political development in Odisha, the announcement of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Odisha assembly polls by political parties has led to a wave of resignations among leaders who were denied tickets. The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have seen at least 10 leaders tendering their resignations since Wednesday. This political upheaval follows closely on the heels of BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's release of the second and third lists for the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls, respectively.

Odisha Leaders Quit Over Poll Tickets

Discontent has spread across various districts including Ganjam, Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, and Kandhamal, with leaders exiting their parties after being overlooked for poll tickets. Notably, in Ganjam, Chief Minister Patnaik's home district, significant resignations include former deputy speaker Ram Chandra Panda and BJD’s state council member T.Gopi. Their departure came after the party nominated Bhrugu Baxipatra, a recent BJP convert, as its Lok Sabha candidate, sidelining long-serving members.

Ram Chandra Panda expressed his dismay over the selection process for the Lok Sabha candidate, questioning the assessment criteria that led to the nomination of a newcomer from the BJP. Panda's political journey saw him elected in 2000 from Chhatrapur on a BJP ticket, serving as deputy speaker in the state assembly, and later joining BJD in 2017 after an unsuccessful bid for the Berhampur Lok Sabha seat in 2014.

Similarly, T Gopi voiced his grievances over being neglected by the party despite his long-standing association since its inception. Other notable resignations include Soro’s sitting MLA Parshuram Dhada and Asit Patnaik from Bhadrak district, highlighting a pattern of dissatisfaction among party loyalists.

The political landscape in Odisha also witnessed protests and dissent within the BJD ranks. Supporters of former Phulbani MLA Debendra Kanhar demonstrated against the party's nomination decisions. Meanwhile, the BJP faced its own set of challenges with state spokesperson Sonali Sahoo resigning to join Congress, inspired by Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra and Congress's progressive policies. Additionally, Congress leader Arindam Sarkhel resigned amidst these political shifts.

The state BJP headquarters experienced protests against certain candidatures, indicating widespread unrest among party supporters. This series of resignations and protests underscores a period of intense political reconfiguration in Odisha as parties finalize their candidates for the forthcoming elections.

As these developments unfold, it is clear that both major parties in Odisha are navigating through internal dissent and reshaping their strategies to consolidate support ahead of the polls. The coming days will reveal how these resignations impact the political dynamics in Odisha as it gears up for a crucial electoral battle.
