Odisha Prepares for May 13 Lok Sabha Elections with 37 Candidates
Odisha is gearing up for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, with 37 candidates set to contest across four key constituencies. The Election Commission (EC) confirmed that the voting for Nabarangpur, Berhampur, Koraput, and Kalahandi Lok Sabha seats will take place on May 13. The nomination process, which began on April 18, saw its conclusion with the last day for withdrawal of nominations recently passing. Initially, 38 candidates had their nominations validated, but one candidate from Koraput has since withdrawn.

This electoral battle will see a diverse group of contestants with 30 men and seven women vying for the seats. The distribution of candidates across the constituencies is as follows: Kalahandi (11 candidates), Nabarangpur (4), Berhampur (11), and Koraput (11). Additionally, 28 assembly segments under these Lok Sabha constituencies are also set to vote on the same day. The state will witness further polling for the remaining Lok Sabha and assembly seats on May 20, May 25, and June 1.
Several prominent figures from various political parties have entered the fray. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra is contesting from the Puri Lok Sabha seat, while former Union Minister Dilip Ray is aiming for a seat in the Rourkela assembly segment. State minister Ranendra Pratap Swain and BJD leader Sanjay Das Burma are contesting from Athagarh and Satyabadi assembly seats, respectively. These nominations were marked by significant processions, highlighting the competitive spirit of the elections.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and BJD organisational secretary Pranab Prakash Das have their sights set on April 30 to file their nominations. Patnaik is seeking reelection in the Hinjili assembly constituency for the sixth time and will also contest from Kantabanji assembly seat in western Odisha. On the other hand, Das is making his electoral debut against Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for the Sambalpur parliamentary seat.
The elections in Odisha are shaping up to be a closely watched affair with key political figures and newcomers alike throwing their hats into the ring. As the state prepares for these crucial polls, the outcomes in these constituencies could significantly influence the political landscape in Odisha.
