Odisha Government Issues Alerts as Heavy Rainfall Expected from Low-Pressure Area
The Odisha government has issued an alert across all districts following the Indian Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast of heavy rainfall. This weather change is due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to hasten the southwest monsoon's arrival in the state. Manorama Mohanty, director of the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, stated that the monsoon is likely to reach Odisha within two to three days.

Conditions are now favourable for the southwest monsoon's onset in Odisha, according to Mohanty. The entire state is anticipated to experience rainfall on Wednesday, with five districts expecting heavy to very heavy showers. The IMD has issued an Orange alert for Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Cuttack, Koraput, and Rayagada, advising residents to be prepared for significant rain.
Weather Alerts and Precautions
A Yellow alert has been announced for the remaining 25 districts, urging people to stay aware of potential weather changes. The IMD reported that a cyclonic circulation has led to a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast at 8:30 am. This system is predicted to move slowly northward and intensify over the next 48 hours.
The Special Relief Commissioner's Office has instructed district administrations to prepare for any emergencies. They are required to report any damage caused by thunderstorms, whirlwinds, hailstorms, lightning, or rainfall immediately. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into deep sea areas from May 29 to June 1.
The IMD's alerts aim to ensure public safety and preparedness as adverse weather conditions approach. By taking these precautions seriously, Odisha hopes to mitigate potential risks associated with the impending heavy rains and monsoon arrival.
