Odisha Elections: ASHA Workers Deployed to Combat Heatstroke Risks
In an innovative move to ensure voter safety amidst the scorching heat, the Election Commission has announced the deployment of ASHA workers at every polling booth in Odisha. This decision comes as a response to the anticipated heatwave conditions and thunderstorms during the election period, set to take place in four phases from May 13 to June 1.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Odisha, Nikunja Bihari Dhal, after a detailed discussion with senior officials from relevant departments, has laid out a comprehensive plan to combat heatstroke risks among voters. The plan includes the provision of essential medical supplies and the presence of paramedical staff at each polling station to offer immediate assistance in case of heat-related emergencies.
Furthermore, Dhal has instructed that every polling booth be equipped with adequate ambulances, ensuring swift medical attention for anyone affected by sunstroke. The Election Commission's directives also encompass the availability of sufficient drinking water, Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) powder, and necessary amenities like toilets, sheds, waiting areas, and seating arrangements to enhance voter comfort and safety.
Special attention is being given to polling and security personnel, who are at a higher risk of heat exposure. Training sessions on sunstroke management will be conducted for polling and presiding officers to prepare them for any heat-related contingencies.
This initiative underscores the Election Commission's commitment to conducting smooth and safe elections in Odisha, prioritizing the well-being of voters and staff against the backdrop of challenging weather conditions.
