Odisha's BJD and BJP Accuse Each Other of Election Code Violations
In a recent turn of events in Bhubaneswar, political tensions have escalated as both the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha have lodged complaints against each other for alleged violations of the model code of conduct (MCC). The MCC is a set of guidelines designed to ensure that elections are conducted in a fair and orderly manner.

The BJD has accused BJP MP Pratap Sarangi of installing solar light posts in various locations within the Aruhuabrutti panchayat area in Balasore district, purportedly to sway voters in his favor. According to the BJD, this act was carried out hastily and is seen as an attempt by MP Sarangi to influence the electorate, given his lack of engagement with the community over the past five years. The party has called upon the Election Commission (EC) to investigate this matter thoroughly and to take necessary action.
On the other hand, the BJP has raised concerns over the BJD's alleged misuse of government resources. It claims that the BJD has uploaded information regarding hundreds of developmental projects slated for implementation across 6,794 panchayats in the state for the fiscal year 2024-25. This action, according to the BJP, constitutes a breach of the MCC, which strictly prohibits any new announcements or promises during the election period.
Odisha is gearing up for a significant electoral process, with both its 147-member assembly and 21 Lok Sabha seats up for grabs. The elections are scheduled to occur in four phases, starting May 13. The enforcement of the MCC is crucial during this period to maintain the integrity and fairness of the electoral process. The MCC restricts any form of new scheme announcements or inaugurations by political parties or candidates, aiming to create a level playing field for all contenders.
The complaints lodged by both parties highlight the intense scrutiny under which political actions are placed during election times, reflecting the critical role of the Election Commission in upholding democratic practices. As these allegations unfold, it remains to be seen how the EC will address these concerns and ensure that the electoral process remains untainted by undue influence or misconduct.
