Renowned Odisha Singer Santilata Barik Dies at 64 After Cancer Battle
Bhubaneswar, Apr 1 - Odisha mourns the loss of its beloved devotional singer, Santilata Barik Chhotray, who passed away at a local hospital on Monday night following a prolonged battle with cancer. At the age of 64, she leaves behind a legacy that has significantly impacted the cultural landscape of Odisha. Her husband, Basant Chhotray, survives her. In her final days, Barik was under intensive care, supported by ventilator facilities, as shared by her family.

Barik's voice resonated in many Odia households, making her a revered figure in the state. Her repertoire included hits like "Thaka Mana Chala Jiba," "Bhaji Bhaji to Nama," "He Chakanayan," and "Balirenu Mahabandha." These songs have not only entertained but also enriched the cultural fabric of Odisha with their spiritual and devotional content.
The singer's academic achievements were notable as well. She was honored with the title of 'acharya' by the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar, reflecting her mastery over her craft. Her musical journey was shaped by the guidance of luminaries such as Balakrushna Das, Markandeya Mahapatra, Singhari Shyamasundar Kar, and Gopal Panda.
For her invaluable contributions to Odia music, language, and culture, Barik was felicitated by the Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy. Her passing has elicited tributes from various quarters. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his sorrow, stating that her demise has left a significant void in the cultural domain of Odisha. He extended his heartfelt condolences to Barik's family and announced that her funeral would be conducted with full state honors.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also paid tribute to Barik's enduring legacy. He remarked on her songs' spiritual passion and devotion, highlighting how through her music, Barik fostered a deep connection among people with Odisha's culture and Sri Jagannath.

Her contributions have not only enriched Odia music but have also played a pivotal role in promoting the state's culture and spiritual heritage.
