Odisha CM Urges Criminals to Reform, Criticizes Previous Government's Failures

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday urged criminals to reform, warning that his government has alternative measures ready to address them. He blamed the previous BJD government for the rise in crimes in Odisha but claimed the current law and order situation is under control.

CM Warns Odisha Criminals to Reform

Majhi stated that the state police are competent but were hindered by the previous BJD government's lack of political will. "I caution criminals to mend their ways, otherwise our government is all prepared with alternate means to fix them," he said during a debate on the demand for grants for the Home Department.

Law and Order Under Control

Majhi criticised the previous administration for allowing criminals to operate without fear. He cited an NCRB report to highlight the low conviction rates, attributing this failure to the former government. "During the previous government, there was no fear among criminals. I am not saying this, the NCRB report is saying this. It is a shame for us that the conviction rate is so low. The previous government is fully responsible for this," he remarked.

To strengthen law enforcement, Majhi announced plans to recruit 3,000 police personnel within 100 days. Additionally, 2,298 home guards will be recruited soon. He also mentioned that each police station would receive at least seven motorcycles and steps would be taken to provide high-performance four-wheelers.

Focus on Coastal Security

Majhi emphasised the need for increased patrolling along the coast to prevent infiltration by Bangladeshi nationals. He has requested a report on infiltration attempts via sea routes. "He asked the police to intensify patrolling along the coast to check attempts of infiltration by Bangladeshi nationals," he stated.

The Chief Minister also addressed concerns about Maoist activities, urging them to return to mainstream society. He assured that his government is committed to ending Maoist activities by 2026. Special courts will be established soon to expedite legal processes.

Security Enhancements

Majhi revealed plans for a special battalion dedicated to enhancing security at the Jagannath temple in Puri. This move aims to ensure better protection for one of Odisha's most significant religious sites.

Referring to BJD president Naveen Patnaik's concerns over law and order, Majhi pointed out Patnaik's absence from the assembly during crucial discussions. "The leader of the opposition is questioning and seeking an answer from me, but he is not present in the House to listen. Maybe he has some other important work outside the assembly," Majhi commented.

Majhi reiterated that licenses obtained by criminals under the previous government have expired and there are no chances of obtaining new ones. His administration aims to maintain strict control over criminal activities through these measures.

The Chief Minister's statements reflect a strong stance on improving law enforcement and addressing past administrative failures. His government's initiatives aim to bolster security and ensure a safer environment in Odisha.
