Odisha Chief Minister Initiates Judicial Inquiry into Alleged Torture of Army Officer and Sexual Assault Case

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has initiated a judicial inquiry into the alleged mistreatment of an Army officer and the sexual assault of his fiancée at a police station. The state government is determined to take stringent action against any individuals or officials found guilty, according to the chief minister. This decision followed discussions with key ministers and senior officers.

Judicial Inquiry Ordered in Odisha Army Case

The alleged incident occurred on September 15 when an Army officer stationed in West Bengal and his fiancée went to Bharatpur police station. They intended to file a complaint about road rage, during which they were reportedly harassed by local youths. A verbal confrontation with some policemen ensued, leading to the alleged assault at the station.

Judicial Inquiry and Investigation

The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) announced that Justice Chittaranjan Das will lead the judicial inquiry, with a report expected within 60 days. The state has also requested the Orissa High Court to oversee the Crime Branch's investigation into the matter. Emphasising adherence to law, Chief Minister Majhi expressed respect for the Indian Army.

The state government has suspended five police personnel from Bharatpur police station and filed charges against them for allegedly torturing the Army officer and sexually harassing his fiancée. Additionally, those accused of misbehaving with the couple on September 15 have been arrested and presented in court.

Political Reactions and Demands

BJD president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik has called for a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe alongside a judicial inquiry into the incident. The opposition party has also announced a Bhubaneswar bandh on September 24 in response to the incident.

Earlier, following instructions from the chief minister, a meeting was held with the complainants, deputy chief ministers, revenue minister, law minister, and other senior officials at the State Guest House. The woman's father and senior serving Army officers were also present at this meeting.

The state government reiterated its commitment to uphold women's dignity, safety, and rights. The CMO stated that these values are of utmost importance to them. The government remains focused on ensuring justice is served in this case.
