Odisha CM Announces State Honours for Organ Donors

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced that organ donors will be honoured with full state honours at their funerals to encourage organ donation in the state.

In a significant move to promote organ donation in Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced on Thursday that the state government will accord full state honors to the funerals of organ donors. This initiative aims to recognize and celebrate the selfless act of individuals who choose to donate their organs after their demise, thereby saving the lives of others.

Odisha Rolls Out Red Carpet for Organ Donors

Encouraging Organ Donation

The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) released a statement explaining the rationale behind this decision. The government intends to honor the courage and sacrifice demonstrated by organ donors, who make a profound impact by giving others a chance to live. By bestowing state honors upon these individuals, the government hopes to raise awareness about the critical importance of organ donation and inspire more people to consider this noble act.

Recognizing the Role of Families

Chief Minister Patnaik acknowledged the crucial role played by the families of brain-dead individuals who make the courageous decision to donate their loved ones' organs. He emphasized that these families play a vital role in saving multiple lives through their selfless decision. Their actions serve as a testament to the power of compassion and the potential for organ donation to transform lives.

State Initiatives for Organ Donation

The Odisha government has taken several proactive steps to promote organ donation and recognize the contributions of donors. In 2019, the state established the State Organ & Tissues Transplant Organization (SOTTO) to streamline and facilitate organ donation and transplantation processes. Additionally, in 2020, the government instituted the Suraj Award to honor organ donors and their families.

The Suraj Award

The Suraj Award was named after a young man named Suraj from Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district. Suraj sustained critical injuries in a road accident and was declared brain dead during treatment. Despite their grief, Suraj's family made the courageous decision to donate his organs, which saved the lives of six individuals. This remarkable act inspired the state government to establish the Suraj Award in recognition of such selfless contributions.

Financial Support for Donor Families

In addition to the state honors and the Suraj Award, the Odisha government provides financial assistance to the families of organ donors. Through the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, each donor family receives Rs 5 lakh as a token of appreciation and support during this difficult time.

The Odisha government's decision to honor organ donors with state funerals and provide various forms of recognition and support is a commendable step towards promoting organ donation in the state. By recognizing the selfless acts of donors and their families, the government aims to create a culture of awareness, compassion, and support for organ donation, ultimately saving more lives and giving hope to those in need.
