Odisha CM Clears Air About 'Mysterious Woman' During His Vatican Visit
In response to opposition queries, BJD Chief and Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik clarified that a woman named Shradha who accompanied him during last year's visit to Vatican City was his physiotherapist. He refuted allegations of her being allotted government quarters or having her travel bill paid by the Government of Odisha.
The Chief Minister (CM) of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, has recently found himself at the heart of a political controversy. The opposition parties have been raising questions about the identity and role of an unidentified woman who was seen accompanying him during his visit to Vatican City in 2020. This issue began circulating after photographs and videos from their trip surfaced on social media platforms.
Chief Minister's Response

In response to these allegations, CM Patnaik clarified that the said woman is named Shradha and she is his physiotherapist. He made this clarification before the end of the monsoon session on Tuesday. According to him, Shradha was sent by his late sister Gita Mehta with the purpose of taking care of his physical fitness during his travel. He further added that she has neither been allotted government quarters nor her travel bill paid by Government of Odisha.
"We should use the precious time in this august House to debate on issues of public interest," he stated, urging for attention to be redirected towards more pressing matters affecting public welfare.
Opposition's Allegations
The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, raised suspicions over this 'mysterious' woman accompanying CM both inside and outside the House. Jaynarayan Mishra, Leader of Opposition from BJP had initially brought up this issue in assembly but due to chaos within parliament proceedings at that time, his statement went unrecorded.
Mishra alleged not only that Shradha had accompanied CM Patnaik during multiple occasions but also claimed she had been allotted a government house - a claim which contradicts Patnaik’s statements regarding her housing arrangements and financial support received from governmental bodies.
Conclusion
This incident underscores how personal lives of political figures often come under intense scrutiny, especially when there is perceived ambiguity or mystery. It also highlights the role of social media in fuelling such controversies as images and videos can easily be shared and discussed on these platforms. However, it's important to remember that while transparency in public life is crucial, focusing on issues directly affecting public welfare should remain a priority.
As for CM Patnaik’s case, by providing a clear explanation about Shradha’s identity and her role during his travels, he has attempted to put an end to this controversy. Yet whether this will satisfy the opposition parties or lead to further inquiries remains uncertain.
