Odia Language Debate Ignites as Naveen Patnaik Accused of Using Roman Script

In a recent development from Bhubaneswar, dated April 3, former BJP leader Sidhant Mohapatra, who has now aligned with the BJD, made striking allegations against Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Mohapatra accused the Chief Minister of not being proficient in Odia, the state's official language, claiming that Patnaik relies on the Roman script to read out Odia. This accusation comes amidst Patnaik's public assertions of his government's efforts to promote the Odia language.

Odia Language Debate in Odisha

The BJD was quick to counter Mohapatra's claims, labeling them as unfounded and politically motivated, especially considering the timing ahead of the elections. The party also questioned Mohapatra's silence on the matter during his tenure with them. Mohapatra, who has been nominated by the BJP for the Digapahandi assembly seat in Ganjam district, expressed his concerns during a press conference. He highlighted what he perceives as the government's neglect towards the Odia language and culture, citing the Chief Minister's absence from the Utakala Dibasa celebration on April 1 as a significant oversight.

Further intensifying his critique, Mohapatra pointed out the state government's handling of the first-ever World Odia Language Conference. He described the treatment of the language at the event as "pathetic and shocking," accusing the government of failing in its duty to promote Odia. Asserting his commitment to safeguarding Odia pride, Mohapatra promised that if the BJP were to come into power, it would elevate the status of the Odia language.

The BJD, however, remains unfazed by these allegations. A senior BJD leader questioned Mohapatra's motives for raising these issues only after joining the BJP and defended Chief Minister Patnaik's record, stating that he has consistently communicated with the public in Odia since assuming office.

This political skirmish underscores a deeper concern for linguistic pride and identity in Odisha. With elections on the horizon, language politics has emerged as a significant battleground, with both parties vying to prove their dedication to promoting and preserving Odia culture.
