Severe Heat Wave in North India Prompts Hospitals to Set Up Special Care Units

Swathes of northern and eastern India continue to suffer from a prolonged heat wave, resulting in an increase in heat stroke cases and deaths. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an advisory to hospitals to set up special units to cater to patients affected by the extreme heat. Although a western disturbance is expected to bring some relief in the coming days, the monsoon has made little progress, prolonging the wait for much-needed rain in the region. Maximum temperatures have soared to 43-45 degrees Celsius in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and north Rajasthan. Hospitals in the national capital have reported a spike in cases of heat stroke and heat exhaustion, with several deaths recorded in the past two days. The situation has prompted Union Health Minister JP Nadda to review the heatwave situation and preparedness of central government hospitals. He has ordered the establishment of special heatwave units in these hospitals. The Union Health Ministry has also issued an advisory to states, directing them to submit daily data on heatstroke cases and deaths, as well as total deaths since March 1, 2024. The ministry has emphasized the importance of maintaining a digital line list of heatstroke cases and deaths at health facility level and investigating suspected heat-related illness deaths. The IMD has reported severe heat wave conditions in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and the Jammu division. However, relief is expected with a fresh western disturbance bringing light rainfall to Delhi on June 20. Some areas in Uttarakhand have already received light showers after a prolonged dry spell. The blistering heat has led to a shortage of water for irrigation and record-low storage levels in reservoirs and rivers. Power grids are also under immense pressure, resulting in incidents of short circuits and fires. The Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC) reported multiple-tripping incidents in the northern region due to a supply gap caused by a surge in power demand. Delhi alone recorded a peak power demand of 8656 MW, the highest ever, due to increased use of air conditioners and other cooling appliances. The heatwave has taken a toll on the health and well-being of the population, with high minimum temperatures exacerbating the impact. Environmentalist Sunita Narain expressed concern over the lack of nighttime cooling, which prevents people from recovering and increases the number of deaths at night. India is currently experiencing one of its hottest summers, with multiple heatwaves and heat-related deaths reported across the country. Climate change and the El Niño phenomenon are believed to be contributing factors to the intensity and frequency of these heatwaves. As the heatwave continues to grip northern and eastern India, it is crucial for authorities to take immediate action to mitigate its impact on public health and infrastructure. The establishment of special heatwave units in hospitals and the submission of daily data on heatstroke cases and deaths will help in monitoring and responding to the situation effectively. Additionally, efforts should be made to raise awareness about heat-related illnesses and promote measures to stay cool and hydrated during this challenging period.
