Omar Abdullah Highlights Challenges in Normalising Relations with Pakistan Amid Rising Terror Incidents

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasises the difficulties in normalising relations with Pakistan due to increased terror incidents and the absence of a credible partner in Islamabad. He calls for concrete actions from Pakistan to create a conducive environment for dialogue.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed concerns about the possibility of normalising relations with Pakistan. He highlighted the increase in terror incidents and the absence of a credible civilian partner in Islamabad as major obstacles. Abdullah emphasised that dialogue is essential, but the current environment is not conducive for talks.

Abdullah stressed that Pakistan must take responsibility for creating a favourable atmosphere for discussions. He cited recent security breaches, such as attacks in Pahalgam and Delhi, as evidence of ongoing hostility. "When incidents like Delhi keep happening, it's difficult to imagine a normalisation of relations," he stated.

Security Concerns and Diplomatic Challenges

The Chief Minister argued that India cannot overlook these provocations and insisted on concrete actions from Pakistan. He called for justice for those responsible for the Mumbai attacks and urged Pakistan to stop orchestrating attacks within Indian territories. Additionally, he demanded that non-state actors be prevented from disrupting regional peace.

Abdullah questioned the effectiveness of engaging with Pakistan's current civilian leadership. He suggested that real power lies with the Pakistani military, making talks with the Prime Minister's Office largely symbolic. "What purpose would be served by Prime Minister Modi talking to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif? None whatsoever," Abdullah remarked.

Historical Context and Ongoing Tensions

Reflecting on historical tensions, Abdullah noted that Jammu and Kashmir's decision to join India in 1947 remains a contentious issue for Islamabad. "There was a reason why a Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir chose not to go with Pakistan," he said, highlighting that this choice continues to fuel conflict.

Addressing security within the Union Territory, Abdullah acknowledged claims of improvement but expressed concern over recent attacks. He pointed to an attack in Pahalgam earlier this year as indicative of ongoing challenges faced by security forces in neutralising terror threats.

The Path Forward: Dialogue and Responsibility

While reiterating his belief in dialogue as the way forward, Abdullah maintained that India cannot be the sole party striving for peace. "The onus doesn't just rest on the Government of India," he stated, emphasising that Pakistan has significant responsibilities in fostering peace.

Abdullah concluded by underscoring the need for both nations to work towards creating a peaceful environment. He reiterated that without concrete actions from Pakistan, normalisation of relations remains a distant prospect.
