No relief in sight as heat wave to persist in east India during next 4 days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted heat wave conditions likely to continue over East India during next 4 days. The weather agency also said that rainfall with thunderstorm over Western Himalayan Region during 17th-20th April and over plains of northwest India on 18th & 19th April.

The Met office said that the maximum temperatures are hovering in the range of 40 to 42 degrees Celsius over some/many parts of plains of Northwest India, Central and East India and 35-40 degrees Celsius over many parts of rest of the country except over Western Himalayan Region (22-25 degrees Celsius) & Islands (30-34 degrees Celsius). Maximum Temperatures were above normal by 3-5 degrees Celsius over many parts of East & Northeast India.

Heat Wave conditions are prevailing in isolated pockets over Gangetic West Bengal since last 6 days; Coastal Andhra Pradesh since last 4 days and Bihar since last 3 days, it said.

IMD also predicted that minimum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius very likely during next 3 days; gradual fall by 2-4 degrees Celsius during subsequent 2 days and rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius thereafter.

Heat wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets over Punjab, Haryana on 17th; over West Uttar Pradesh on 18th; over East Uttar Pradesh on 18th & 19th April and abate thereafter, the IMD said.

Meanwhile, in East India, no significant change in maximum Temperatures during next 5 days. Heat wave conditions are very likely in isolated/some pockets over Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar during next 4 days; over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim & Odisha during next 2 days and over Jharkhand on 18th & 19th April.

The weather office further added that rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C very likely during next 3 days and fall by 2-3°C during subsequent 2 days acros Central India:.

As per IMD, in South Peninsular India, rise in maximum temperatures by about 2°C very likely over Andhra Pradesh and Telangana during next 5 days. Heat wave conditions very likely in isolated pockets over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam during next 3 days.

IMD has also predicted that West India, rise in maximum temperatures over Maharashtra by 2-3°C during next 3 days and no significant change thereafter.

Northwest India:

Light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning very likely over Western Himalayan Region during next 5 days and isolated to scattered rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Rajasthan during 18th-20th April, stated IMD press release.

Heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan & Muzaffarabad on 18th; over Himachal Pradesh on 18th & 19th and over Uttarakhand on 19th April.

Isolated Hailstorm very likely over Himachal Pradesh on 17th & 18th; over Uttarakhand during 18th to 20th; over Punjab on 18th 7 19th April, 2023.

West India: Light isolated rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds very likely over parts of Maharashtra next 5 days. Isolated hailstorm also likely over Madhya Maharashtra today, on 17th April, 2023.
