No More FASTag? India to Launch New Toll Collection System Starting May 1
India is set to roll out a game-changing upgrade to the way tolls are collected on national highways starting May 1. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is phasing out the FASTag system and replacing it with a GPS-based toll collection method - a move aimed at making road travel smoother, faster, and more transparent.

Why the Shift?
FASTag has helped reduce waiting time at toll booths, but it hasn't been perfect. Long queues, technical glitches, and misuse of tags continue to be pain points. To address these issues and bring tolling on par with global standards, the government is switching to a satellite-backed toll system.
The new system is designed to:
- Charge tolls based on how far you actually drive
- Cut down waiting time by removing the need to stop at booths
- Prevent manual errors and reduce the risk of fraud
- Enable a more seamless and contactless driving experience
What's This GPS-Based System All About?
The new model uses GPS technology to track your vehicle's movement on highways. It also uses ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras and vehicle-fitted GPS devices to calculate toll charges in real-time.
That means:
- You won't be paying flat rates anymore - charges will be based on kilometers traveled
- No stopping or slowing down at toll plazas
- The toll amount will be deducted directly from your linked bank account
- You'll be able to track your travel and payments digitally
What FASTag Users Should Know
If you're already using FASTag, don't worry - the transition is expected to be gradual.
Here's what you'll need to do:
Keep using FASTag until April 30, 2025
After that, install a government-approved GPS device in your vehicle
Link your bank account to the new system
Once fully onboarded, remove your FASTag sticker
What's in It for You?
The benefits of this upgrade go beyond just quicker toll payments:
- No more waiting in line
- Pay only for the distance you travel
- Lower fuel consumption and fewer emissions
- Better road safety with fewer stoppages
- More transparency in toll deductions and billing
This shift is one of the biggest changes India's highways have seen in years. While it may take some time to get used to the new system, it's expected to make road travel more efficient for private car owners, truckers, and transporters alike.
The government is expected to launch awareness drives and support centres to help with installations and onboarding. So if you're hitting the road after May 1, your toll experience will likely look very different - and a lot more high-tech.
