Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) President Nitish Kumar on Saturday told Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi that the Congress leadership must stop defending 'tainted' Lalu Prasad family.

Nitish Kumar met Rahul Gandhi for half an hour in Delhi, however, JD(U) played down the meeting as a 'courtesy call. Nitish is in Delhi to attend a dinner hosted by PM Narendra Modi for outgoing President Pranab Mukherjee, reports News18

A close aide of Nitish told News18 that during the meeting, Nitish reminded Rahul Gandhi of the day when he had torn an ordinance that was dubbed as 'save the convict' bill in 2013, only a month before the RJD chief Lalu Prasad was found guilty in a fodder scam related case

The conversation between Nitish Kumar and Rahul Gandhi comes at a time their coalition in Bihar, the Mahagatbandhan, is in serious trouble amid corruption charges against ally Lalu Yadav and his family, including son Tejashwi who is Deputy Chief Minister.

Nitish Kumar, who will attend PM Modi's dinner as the president of his party Janata Dal (United), had earlier confirmed that he will attend President-elect Ram Nath Kovind's oath ceremony on Tuesday in a separate trip to the capital and will also pack in a long overdue meeting with Rahul Gandhi.

The running feud between RJD, JD(U) is getting shriller with every passing day as JD (U) is demanding deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav to come clean on the corruption charges against him.

Yesterday, JD (U) hit back at a senior RJD leader who had ruled out Tejaswi Yadav's resignation over a graft case and made light of the party's claim of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's "sacrifice" in forming the anti-BJP coalition in Bihar.

Nitish Kumar had held a closed-door meeting with Tejaswi Yadav after the latter did not share the stage with the CM in a public function. However, JD (U) played-down the political significance of the meeting between Nitish Kumar and his deputy on Tuesday.

The party reiterated its stand that the RJD leader should clear all accusations against him on the basis of facts in the public domain.
