IIT Madras retained its top position in both the overall and engineering categories. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru once again led the universities category, followed by JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia. IISc also secured the second spot in the overall category.

Changes and Additions in NIRF Categories

This year's rankings introduced three new categories: Open Universities, Skill Universities, and State Public Universities. The subject domains now include Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medical, Architecture and Planning, Dental, and the newly added Agriculture and Allied Sectors.

Notable changes in criteria this year include the revision of faculty-to-student ratios: for medical colleges, it has been adjusted from 1:15 to 1:10, and for state-funded government institutes, from 1:20 to 1:15. Anil Sahasrabuddhe, Chairman of the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), also announced that a Sustainability Ranking will be introduced next year to address carbon neutrality and environmental concerns.
