Kerala Nipah Virus Tragedy: Teen Dies, Close Contacts Test Negative
A 14-year-old boy from Malappuram, Kerala, who was being treated for Nipah infection, passed away on Sunday. Health Minister Veena George confirmed that samples from six of his friends and a 68-year-old man tested negative. The six friends had direct contact with the boy, while the older man did not but was tested due to fever.

Currently, 330 people are on the contact list, including 68 health workers. Among them, 101 individuals are in the high-risk category, with seven admitted to the hospital for treatment. None of the deceased boy's family members are showing symptoms, according to George.
Health Department Actions
The health department conducted a fever survey in Pandikkad panchayat, identifying 18 fever cases from 307 houses. In Anakkayam panchayat, 10 fever cases were found in a survey of 310 houses. None of these cases were linked to the deceased boy.
George announced that a detailed route map of the boy would be released soon. She urged anyone who might have come into contact with him to seek treatment from the health department. Additionally, a mobile laboratory from Pune NIV is expected to arrive in Kerala on Monday.
Preventive Measures and Protocols
The health department has mandated strict protocols for Plus One seat allotments scheduled for Monday in the district. Social distancing must be maintained, and all participants, including officials, students, and parents, are required to wear masks.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed condolences over the boy's death and stated that all efforts were made to save him. George reported that the boy suffered a massive cardiac arrest at 10:50 am on Sunday and could not be revived despite efforts.
Public Health Concerns
Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan called the death unfortunate and criticised the government for failing to address public health issues in Kerala. He highlighted that infectious diseases like COVID-19, cholera, shigella, hepatitis, and now Nipah remain prevalent due to inadequate waste removal and lack of pre-monsoon cleaning.
Satheesan emphasised that action is needed to prevent the spread of deadly diseases by coordinating all departments urgently. He mentioned that the UDF would organise a health conclave to discuss public health issues in the state.
Nipah Virus History
Nipah outbreaks have occurred in Kerala multiple times: Kozhikode district in 2018, 2021, and 2023; Ernakulam district in 2019. Antibodies for Nipah virus have been detected in bats across Kozhikode, Wayanad, Idukki, Malappuram, and Ernakulam districts.
The state government recently announced a special action calendar for preventing future Nipah outbreaks. Chief Minister Vijayan urged citizens not to destroy bat habitats and avoid eating fruits bitten by animals or found abandoned. He also advised washing hands with soap or using sanitizer after any contact with bats or their excreta.
The deceased boy attended school on May 11. So far, there have been few cases of patients showing symptoms. The chief minister called for collective efforts to combat the Nipah virus and stressed following health department instructions.
