NIA Raids Multiple Locations In Punjab Linked To Gurpatwant Singh Pannun Terror Probe
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has intensified its probe into a terror conspiracy by conducting searches at multiple locations in Punjab on Friday. This action is part of an ongoing investigation targeting Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a known Khalistani terrorist and his organization, Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), which has been banned. Pannun, who has been on the NIA's radar since 2019, is accused of instigating violence and promoting terror activities through his network. The searches took place in Moga, Bathinda, and Mohali, uncovering various incriminating items such as digital devices, which are currently being examined for further evidence.

In a statement, the NIA highlighted the scope of their investigation, which delves into the alleged conspiracy by Pannun and other SFJ members to provoke violence and engage in terror-related acts. The agency had initially registered this case on November 17, 2023, citing sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967. This legal action underscores the seriousness of the threats posed by Pannun and his associates, including their efforts to disrupt major transportation networks and utilities within India.
Pannun, who self-identifies as the general counsel of SFJ, had previously issued threats via social media, specifically targeting Air India flights and warning Sikhs against using the airline from November 19, 2023, onwards. He claimed there would be safety risks and even threatened to halt Air India's global operations. His alarming statements extended to shutting down the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on the same date, prompting heightened security measures across India, Canada, and other nations where Air India operates.
The threats issued by Pannun are part of a broader strategy to sow discord and incite conflict between Sikhs and other communities in India, according to the NIA. By targeting essential services and spreading false narratives about the situation in Punjab, Pannun aims to destabilize the region and challenge the Indian government. This approach has led to significant scrutiny from the NIA, which has been actively working to counter SFJ's propaganda and its attempts to disrupt public order.
In addition to the recent raids, the NIA has taken concrete steps against Pannun in the past. In September 2023, his property assets, including a share of a house and land in Amritsar and Chandigarh, were confiscated. Furthermore, in February 2021, a special NIA court issued non-bailable warrants for his arrest, and in November 2022, he was officially declared a "Proclaimed Offender."
The ongoing actions by the NIA against Pannun and the SFJ highlight the government's resolve to combat terrorism and protect national security. By dismantling networks that seek to incite violence and promote terror, the agency aims to maintain peace and stability within the country. The investigation into Pannun and his associates is a clear message that threats to India's sovereignty and the safety of its citizens will be met with firm and decisive action.
