NIA Arrests PFI Cadre in Connection with 2010 Kerala Professor Assault
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a member of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) for allegedly harbouring an accused in the Kerala professor palm chopping case. According to an official, C Shafeer provided refuge to Savad after he went into hiding following the attack on retired Professor T J Joseph in July 2010.

Accused's Capture and Background
Savad was apprehended by the NIA in Kannur this January after evading capture for 13 years. He was part of a PFI hit team and was chargesheeted in January 2021. This case is one of the earliest instances in India showcasing the violent extremism ideology pursued by PFI.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred when Professor T J Joseph's palm was severed for allegedly mocking Prophet Mohammed in a Malayalam question paper for BCom students at Newman College, Thodupuzha, Idukki district, Kerala. The case led to the conviction of 19 individuals under various sections of the IPC and UAP Act.
NIA investigations revealed that Shafeer himself was involved in several violent acts for PFI. An agency spokesperson stated that Shafeer had sheltered Savad after he fled post-attack. The spokesperson added, "Savad was caught from Kannur in January this year by the agency after being on the lam for 13 years."
The NIA's ongoing efforts have highlighted the extent of PFI's involvement in violent extremism. The agency continues to investigate and bring to justice those associated with such acts.
