Celebrating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Human Rights Day is observed annually on December 10 to mark the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. The UDHR sets out a broad range of fundamental human rights and freedoms that all people are entitled to, regardless of their race, sex, nationality, religion, or any other status.

NHRC's Three Decades of Service

The NHRC, established in 1993, has played a crucial role in safeguarding and promoting human rights in India. Over the past 30 years, the Commission has registered more than 22.48 lakh cases, disposed of over 22.41 lakh cases, and recommended payment of more than Rs 230 crore as relief to victims of human rights violations.

Recent Activities and Initiatives

From December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023, the NHRC registered 80,376 cases, including 117 cases taken up suo motu. During the same period, the Commission disposed of 88,451 old and new cases. In 390 cases, the NHRC recommended over Rs 18.27 crore in relief to victims of human rights violations.

The NHRC has also been actively engaged in raising awareness among public officials and civil society on various human rights issues. Through its initiatives and activities, the Commission promotes a human rights-centered approach in policies and programs.

HRCNet Portal for Efficient Case Resolution

To enhance its reach and expedite the resolution of cases, the NHRC has developed the HRCNet Portal. This online platform allows for seamless collaboration with State Human Rights Commissions, helping to eliminate duplication of complaints and track the status of cases.

Advisories on Critical Human Rights Issues

In the past year, the NHRC has issued four significant advisories addressing pressing human rights concerns. These advisories focus on mitigating deliberate self-harm and suicide attempts by prisoners, ensuring the welfare of transgender persons, addressing mental health issues, and protecting children's rights against the production, distribution, and consumption of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

NHRC's Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHRC has been proactive in issuing advisories to safeguard human rights during these challenging times. The Commission has issued 25 advisories to date, providing guidance on various aspects of pandemic management and ensuring the protection of vulnerable populations.

The NHRC's unwavering commitment to human rights has made a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals in India. As the nation observes Human Rights Day, it is an opportune moment to recognize and appreciate the Commission's tireless efforts in upholding the dignity and rights of all citizens.
