NHRC Raises Concerns Over Bihar Police Detention Leading to Snake Bite Victim's Death

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken action regarding a troubling incident in Bihar. A man, bitten by a snake, reportedly died after being detained by police in Kaimur district. The NHRC has issued a notice to Bihar's police chief, demanding an explanation for the alleged misconduct that prevented the man from receiving urgent medical care.

NHRC Notice on Bihar Police and Snake Bite Death

According to reports, the man was bitten by a snake while tending to his crops on the night of September 26. In distress, he ran towards his village but was stopped by a patrolling police team. Despite his pleas for help, the officers allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 2,000 to let him go. Unable to pay the full amount, he called his brother, who managed to gather only Rs 700.

Police Misconduct and Delayed Treatment

The NHRC highlighted that if these allegations are accurate, they represent a severe violation of human rights. The police's failure to assist the man promptly could have contributed to his death. The Commission has requested a detailed report from the Director General of Police in Bihar within two weeks. This report should include the status of any investigation and actions taken against the involved officers.

The NHRC's statement also mentioned that the district magistrate of Kaimur has been asked to confirm whether any compensation has been provided to the victim's family. The Commission is keen on ensuring accountability and justice for the deceased man's relatives.

Bribery Allegations and Investigation

The media report dated September 27 detailed how the police allegedly accompanied the man home after stopping him. However, no money was available at his house. His brother eventually arranged Rs 700, which was handed over to the police. Unfortunately, this delay in securing funds resulted in significant time lost for obtaining critical medical treatment.

The NHRC's intervention underscores its commitment to addressing abuses of power by law enforcement. The Commission's actions aim to prevent similar incidents and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about police conduct and accountability in India. It raises questions about how such situations are handled and stresses the importance of timely medical intervention in emergencies.
