New Year e-Cards Scam: Do Not Click On Any e-Cards, Be Cautious

As we approach the New Year, it's crucial to be vigilant about the increasing cyber threats, especially through platforms like WhatsApp. Cybercriminals have devised sophisticated methods to exploit individuals, from seemingly harmless New Year e-cards to automated calls offering irresistible deals. These tactics, while inventive, aim to infiltrate your personal space to pilfer sensitive information, which could lead to financial losses and compromised privacy.

One particularly insidious method involves the use of APK files, which are unauthorized applications that, once downloaded, can grant hackers complete control over a victim's device. This control extends to monitoring user activity, accessing banking details, contacts, photo galleries, and even manipulating financial transactions. The consequences of such breaches can be severe, leading to unauthorized access to personal and banking information.

In light of these threats, Jodhpur IGP Vikas Kumar has issued a warning regarding the allure of New Year e-cards. "You might receive a link for a New Year greeting message, but clicking on it could be disastrous," he stated. He advises that if the message comes from a trusted source and seems legitimate, one might consider opening it, but with utmost caution. However, in cases of doubt, it's safer to avoid engaging with the message altogether. Kumar further recommends immediate action if one falls prey to such a scam, either by calling the toll-free helpline 1930 or reporting the incident to the nearest police station.

The jeopardy doesn't end with malicious APK files or deceptive e-cards; WhatsApp accounts are also under threat. Hackers are targeting users with malicious links or messages that, once clicked, allow them to take control over the WhatsApp accounts. This breach could result in blackmail or financial demands from contacts, leveraging personal photos or documents against the victim.

Another disturbing trend is the auto-call scam, where victims receive calls offering attractive deals. These calls trick users into dialing specific numbers, redirecting all their calls and messages to the hackers, who then gather OTPs to drain the victim's bank accounts.

To combat these cyber risks, there are several precautions one can take:

  • Avoid downloading or opening APK files from unverified sources.
  • Be skeptical of auto-call schemes that prompt you to dial numbers.
  • Never divulge personal or financial information during unsolicited calls.
  • Dismiss any offers or prizes communicated through calls, OTPs, or unknown numbers.
  • Only download applications from trusted sources like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  • Verify app ratings, reviews, and developer information before installation.
  • Protect your device with reputable antivirus software to detect and eliminate malicious apps and files.

By staying informed and practicing these safety measures, individuals can safeguard their personal and financial information against cybercriminals. As the digital landscape evolves, so do the threats, making it paramount to stay proactive in protecting oneself from potential cyber scams in the coming year.
