Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla met with representatives of the All India Motor Transport Congress to discuss concerns over a new penal provision related to hit-and-run cases. The government assured truckers that their concerns will be considered and no decision will be taken without consultation.

In response to protests by truckers over a new penal provision related to hit-and-run cases, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla has assured that the decision to invoke the provision will only be made after consultation with the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC). Bhalla appealed to the AIMTC and all agitating drivers to return to work.

Clarification on Law's Implementation

Bhalla emphasized that the new laws and provisions have not yet come into effect. He clarified that the decision to invoke Section 106 2 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita will be taken only after consultation with the AIMTC. This statement came after a meeting with a delegation of the AIMTC.

Addressing Truckers' Concerns

Bhalla acknowledged the concerns raised by truckers regarding the provision of 10 years imprisonment and fine. He held detailed discussions with representatives of the AIMTC to understand their apprehensions.

Government's Openness to Feedback

A home ministry spokesperson conveyed the government's willingness to consider with an open heart all concerns expressed by the agitating truckers. The spokesperson appealed to the truckers to return to work, assuring them that their feedback would be taken into account.

Provisions of the New Law

According to the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, whoever causes the death of any person by rash and negligent driving of a vehicle, not amounting to culpable homicide, and escapes without reporting it to a police officer or a magistrate soon after the incident, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term that may extend to ten years and shall also be liable to fine.

Positive Outcome of the Meeting

The meeting between the government and the AIMTC delegation was termed successful by the MHA spokesperson. The government's willingness to engage in dialogue and consider the concerns of the truckers was seen as a positive step towards resolving the issue.
