NEET-UG Results Row: Inflated Marks, Paper Leak Allegations, And Education Ministry Sets Up Panel

Earlier this week, the National Testing Agency (NTA) unveiled the results of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2024, a pivotal examination determining admission to medical, dental, and AYUSH courses in government and private colleges.

However, the jubilation accompanying the announcement was short-lived as the outcome was clouded by allegations of irregularities and paper leaks, particularly concerning the inflated marks received by approximately 67 medical aspirants.

Controversy Surrounding NEET-UG 2024 Results

The Disputed Results

The controversy erupted when it was discovered that a significant number of candidates had secured the top rank and achieved a perfect score of 720 out of 720. Some candidates even received scores of 718 or 719, figures deemed implausible under the +4 -1 exam scheme.
Suspicions were further aroused when it was revealed that six candidates from the same exam centre in Haryana had scored remarkably high percentiles, raising concerns about the fairness and transparency of the examination process.

Outcry and Demand for Re-examination

Following the announcement of the results, numerous candidates expressed outrage and disbelief, prompting demands for the cancellation of the results and calls for a re-examination. Protests erupted in various cities across the country, with students advocating for transparency and fairness in the examination process.
The controversy gained further traction when it was reported that at least two petitions challenging the results had been filed in High Courts, underscoring the widespread discontent among candidates.

NTA's Defense and Response

In response to the allegations, the NTA defended the integrity of the examination, attributing the inflated marks to changes made in NCERT textbooks and the allocation of grace marks to compensate for lost time during the exam.

However, concerns persisted regarding the transparency and fairness of the marking process, prompting the NTA to form a grievance redressal committee to address the grievances of affected candidates.

Calls for Transparency and Accountability

Despite the NTA's assurances, questions linger regarding the credibility of the NEET-UG 2024 results and the fairness of the examination process. The controversy serves as a stark reminder of the challenges inherent in conducting nationwide entrance examinations and underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability in the assessment process. As stakeholders await further developments, the focus remains on ensuring fairness and equity in future iterations of the NEET examination.

Education Ministry Sets Up Panel

  1. A four-member panel has been established by the education ministry to assess the grace marks awarded to over 1,500 candidates in the NEET-UG medical entrance exam.

  2. Allegations of mark inflation have emerged, particularly with 67 candidates sharing the first rank, prompting calls for a re-examination due to concerns that the grace marks may have inflated marks.
  3. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact of grace marks awarded at six exam centres in Meghalaya, Bahadurgarh (Haryana), Dantewada and Balodh (Chhattisgarh), Surat (Gujarat), and Chandigarh.
  4. The National Testing Agency (NTA) disclosed that a high-powered committee, chaired by a former UPSC chairman, has been formed to reassess the results of the affected candidates.
  5. The committee is expected to submit its recommendations within a week, potentially leading to revisions in the results of these candidates.
