NDMC Doubles Parking Charges to Discourage Use of Private Vehicles

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has doubled the charges for parking sites managed by it to discourage people from using private vehicles. This move is aimed at reducing pollution levels in the national capital.

In an effort to combat high pollution levels in the national capital, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has doubled the charges for parking sites managed by it. This move is aimed at discouraging people from using private vehicles and promoting the use of public transport or carpooling.

Reason Behind the Decision

NDMC doubles parking charges

The decision to increase parking charges was made in light of the Graded Action Response Plan (GRAP) Stage IV guidelines that are currently in place in Delhi due to the severe pollution situation. GRAP, the Central government's air pollution control plan for Delhi-NCR, categorizes actions into four stages based on the Air Quality Index (AQI) levels.

Revised Parking Charges

The NDMC presently charges Rs 20 per hour and a maximum of Rs 100 per day for four-wheelers at surface parking sites and Rs 10 per hour and a maximum of Rs 50 per day for two-wheelers. The monthly charges for four-wheelers are fixed at Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 for two-wheelers. The agency charges Rs 10 for up to four hours for four-wheelers and Rs 5 for up to four hours for two-wheelers at its multilevel parking sites. The same rates apply at Palika underground parking.

Impact of the Decision

The decision to double parking charges is expected to discourage people from using private vehicles, especially during peak hours. This, in turn, is likely to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in the city. The move is also aimed at promoting the use of public transport and carpooling, which can help reduce the number of vehicles on the roads.

The NDMC's decision to double parking charges is a step in the right direction towards addressing the issue of air pollution in Delhi. By discouraging the use of private vehicles, the civic body hopes to improve the air quality and create a more sustainable transportation system in the city.
