NCRTC Commences Trial Runs for Meerut Metro Trains to Ensure Safety and Efficiency

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has initiated trial runs for the Meerut Metro trains. These trials began on Sunday, as per an official statement. The testing phase involves running the trains at various speeds between Meerut South and just before Meerut Central Station.

NCRTC Begins Meerut Metro Trial Runs

During these trials, the trains are initially operated manually under the Train Control Management System (TCMS). The process starts with the train moving slowly from Meerut South Station to just before the underground section of Meerut Central. It then returns at a higher speed. The trials are crucial for assessing the tracks and traction systems.

Testing Procedures and Safety Measures

The testing phase includes operating trains at speeds ranging from 40 km/h to their designed maximum of 135 km/h. This will continue until the metro becomes fully operational. Various tests are conducted to ensure passenger safety, adhering to international standards. These tests include weight assessments using sandbags and safety checks under dynamic conditions.

Passenger comfort is also evaluated by running trains on different curves along the corridor. Tests ensure integrated performance with subsystems like signalling, platform screen doors (PSD), and the overhead supply system. This comprehensive testing ensures that all aspects of train operation meet safety and comfort standards.

Infrastructure and Design Features

The Meerut Metro corridor spans 23 kilometres, with 18 kilometres elevated and five kilometres underground. Thirteen stations are being constructed, including three underground ones. Stations such as Meerut Central, Bhainsali, and Begumpul will be underground, while others will be elevated.

For the first time in India, a local metro in Meerut will use infrastructure designed for semi-high-speed Namo Bharat trains. Both Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro services will operate at stations like Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram.

Train Features and Passenger Amenities

Twelve three-coach trainsets for the Meerut Metro have been manufactured in Savli, Gujarat. Ten of these have already arrived at the Duhai depot. The design focuses on maximum comfort, safety, and security for passengers.

The air-conditioned trains feature ergonomically designed 2x2 transverse and longitudinal seating arrangements. They also include luggage racks, grab handles, USB charging facilities, and other essential amenities for passengers' convenience.

All Meerut Metro stations have taken shape with civil construction nearing completion. This development marks a significant step towards enhancing urban transport in Meerut while ensuring passenger comfort and safety.
