NCERT's New Class 12 Model Revealed: See How Your How Your Performance In Classes 9-11 Will Affect Final Marks

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced a significant change in the evaluation model for Class 12 board exams, according to NDTV. According to the latest report from NCERT's Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH), Class 12 board results will now reflect a student's overall performance from Classes 9 through 11, alongside Class 12 assessments.

The report, titled Establishing Equivalence across Education Boards, outlines a new formula for calculating Class 12 marks. It proposes that 15 per cent of the final grade will be based on performance in Class 9, 20 per cent from Class 10, 25 per cent from Class 11, and the remaining 40 per cent from Class 12 itself.

This approach aims to provide a more comprehensive assessment by integrating students' achievements over a longer period. The marking scheme detailed in the report is as follows:

  • Class 9: 70 per cent of the marks will be derived from formative assessments, while 30 per cent will come from summative assessments.
  • Class 10: Both formative and summative assessments will carry equal weight, each contributing 50 per cent to the final grade.
  • Class 11: The weighting will be 40 per cent for formative assessments and 60 per cent for summative assessments.
  • Class 12: This year's assessments will include 30 per cent from formative assessments and 70 per cent from summative assessments.

In addition to the evaluation changes, the report underscores the importance of vocational and skill-based training. It recommends incorporating subjects such as Data Management, Coding, Application Development, Artificial Intelligence, Music, Arts, and Crafts into the curriculum.

Furthermore, the report stresses the need to enhance teacher performance and improve school infrastructure. This includes ensuring access to clean water, well-equipped libraries, and adequate sports facilities to foster a better learning environment.

PARAKH, established by NCERT under the Ministry of Education, has previously advocated for standardised assessments across various educational boards in India. This latest report continues in that vein, aiming to provide a fairer and more holistic evaluation system for students.
