NBCC Urges Arunachal Pradesh to Reconsider Anti-Conversion Bill Amid Concerns of Misuse

The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has raised concerns about the potential reintroduction of an anti-conversion bill in Arunachal Pradesh. In a letter to Chief Minister Pema Khandu, NBCC General Secretary Zelhou Keyho urged reconsideration of the bill, highlighting fears that it might be used to target specific religious communities.

NBCC Voices Concern on Anti-Conversion Bill

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu recently addressed these concerns, stating that the new rules under the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA) 1978 are not designed to single out any religious group. Instead, they aim to protect the indigenous culture and beliefs of the state's people, irrespective of their religion.

Concerns Over Misuse

The NBCC's apprehension stems from worries that the anti-conversion law could be misapplied to suppress certain religious groups. They appealed to Khandu to consider the diverse communities within Arunachal Pradesh when making decisions about the bill. "We pray and appeal to your good leadership to be sensitive and be considerate, taking the whole region in mind," Keyho stated.

During Statehood Day celebrations, Khandu explained that the formulation of these rules was a response to a High Court directive. He noted that although the Act has existed for 46 years, it lacked a formal set of rules, which is now being addressed.

Inclusive Approach

Khandu assured that discussions with officials, stakeholders, and religious leaders would take place to ensure an inclusive approach. The intention behind these new rules is not to target Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, or Muslims but rather to provide more support for the state's indigenous population.

The NBCC's appeal highlights the importance of considering all communities' concerns in Arunachal Pradesh. As discussions continue, it remains crucial for all parties involved to work towards a balanced solution that respects both cultural preservation and religious freedom.
