National Recognition for Folk Art Inspires Young Generation, Says Raghuveer Khedkar After Padma Shri Award

Veteran folk artist Raghuveer Khedkar, recently honoured with the Padma Shri award, views this recognition as a testament to his lifelong dedication to preserving traditional art forms. He believes this accolade will inspire younger generations to appreciate and pursue folk art. Khedkar began his stage career at nine and has spent over five decades promoting the folk art tradition, especially tamasha.

Inspiration for Young Artistes

Khedkar emphasised that the Padma award serves as a significant motivation for young artists. "This honour will encourage young artistes. They will realise that even in folk art, one can receive a Padma award. The Government of India has taken a very good decision, and I welcome it," he stated. He hopes this recognition sends a strong message about the value of folk art.

Challenges in the Modern Era

In today's digital age, Khedkar identifies smartphones as a major challenge for live folk performances. "The mobile phone is the biggest challenge today. But the tamasha fraternity is making continuous efforts to face it," he noted. Despite this, he finds it encouraging that audiences still attend lavni dance performances and stay through the night.

Adapting to Technology

Khedkar acknowledges the need to adapt to technological advancements while maintaining traditional art forms. "We are using technology positively. Whatever good we can take from it, we absorb and present it through our stage performances," he explained. This approach helps keep the art form relevant and engaging for modern audiences.

Leading by Example

Khedkar believes in setting an example for younger artists by continuing to perform actively on stage. "When artistes see someone of my age still performing on stage, it inspires them to continue with dedication," he shared. His commitment serves as a powerful motivator for aspiring performers.

Looking ahead, Khedkar plans to establish an old-age home and foster children's interest in art and stage performance. He remains dedicated to nurturing future generations' passion for traditional arts while ensuring they have opportunities to showcase their talents on stage.
