Nadda Condemns Police 'Highhandedness' in Kolkata Amid Safety Protests
BJP president J P Nadda criticised the Kolkata police's handling of protesters agitating against the rape-murder of a trainee doctor. He claimed that in Mamata Banerjee's West Bengal, aiding criminals is prioritised. His comments followed police using lathi-charge, water cannons, and tear gas to disperse protesters who threw stones and bricks at security forces and attempted to breach barricades leading to the state secretariat.

Nadda stated on X, "The images of police highhandedness from Kolkata have angered every person who values democratic principles. In Didis West Bengal, to help rapists and criminals is valued but its a crime to speak for womens safety." He accused the Kolkata police of suppressing the public's demand for justice and criticised Banerjee for remaining silent about the heinous crime against a woman and misleading her parents.
Police Actions and Public Outrage
The BJP leader alleged that Banerjee had crossed all limits of ruthlessness and dictatorship to protect the accused. He noted that Howrah Bridge was sealed, and over 6,000 police officers were deployed to manage young protesters. Nadda also referenced the Sandeshkhali incident to argue that the chief minister has failed to deliver justice for women in the state.
He questioned Banerjee's motives for protecting the accused and expressed confidence that people would support the BJP's call for a bandh in the state. "Banerjee crossed all limits of ruthlessness and dictatorship to save the accused," he alleged in a statement.
Political Reactions and Public Sentiment
Nadda's remarks have sparked significant political reactions and public sentiment. The BJP president believes that Banerjee's actions will lead to increased support for their call for a bandh. He stated, "He expressed confidence that people will support the BJPs call for bandh in the state and destroy her arrogance."
The incident has intensified political tensions in West Bengal, with both parties accusing each other of failing to protect women's safety. The public outrage over the police's actions has added fuel to an already charged political environment.
The situation remains tense as both sides continue to exchange accusations. The BJP is determined to hold Banerjee accountable, while her administration defends its actions as necessary for maintaining law and order.
The unfolding events in West Bengal highlight deep-seated issues regarding women's safety and political accountability. As protests continue, both parties are under scrutiny from the public and media alike.
