In an exclusive interview with OneIndia, Ahmed Adeeb, the former Vice President and Tourism Minister of Maldives, and President of the Maldives Third-Way Democrats, expressed concern over the recent diplomatic controversy between India and Maldives.

Adeeb highlighted that the remarks made by certain ministers in the Muizzu government during elections, which included anti-India commentary, were used as political tools. He emphasised the need for prompt action to prevent the issue from escalating into a full-blown diplomatic crisis.

Adeeb stressed on the importance of responsibility among young activists who have been appointed as ministers in the Muizzu government. He criticised the delayed response from the government and highlighted the negative impact on the tourism industry, which is vital for the Maldivian economy.

Adeeb called for stronger action against the ministers, suggesting that suspension might not be sufficient. He urged President Muizzu to reach out to Prime Minister Modi and issue an apology to address the now-strained relations between the two nations.

Commenting on Muizzu's visit to China and the shift in foreign policy, Adeeb stressed the need for a balanced approach. Traditionally, Maldivian presidents visited India first, but Muizzu's first foreign visit has come in form of a visit to China.

Adeeb acknowledged the significance of the Indian market for Maldives' tourism, emphasizing the need to reconcile and prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

Adeeb added that people of Maldives harbour no animosity towards India and conveyed the deep affection for the country. He highlighted the mutual benefits of fostering economic growth together, envisioning a harmonious relationship between Maldives and India.

In the end, Adeeb called for the swift resolution of the controversy, emphasising the importance of fixing the situation promptly and maintaining robust relations between the two nations.
