Muslim Organisation in Bihar Declines Nitish Kumar's Iftaar Invitation Due to Waqf Bill Support

A significant Muslim organisation in Bihar has decided to reject Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's invitation to an Iftaar event. This decision is a protest against his support for the Waqf Bill. The Imarat Shariah, which claims followers in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha, shared their response to the invitation for the Iftaar scheduled at the chief minister's residence.

Bihar Muslim Body Rejects Nitishs Iftaar Invite

The Imarat Shariah's letter stated, "A decision has been taken not to attend the government sarkaari Iftaar on March 23.....this decision has been taken in view of your support for the Waqf Bill, which threatens to worsen economic and educational backwardness of Muslims." They accused Kumar of breaking promises made when he rose to power, pledging a secular rule that protected minority rights.

Protest Against Waqf Bill

The organisation criticised Kumar's alliance with the BJP and his backing of legislation they deem unconstitutional and illogical. They argue that this stance contradicts his earlier commitments. The Imarat Shariah described the Iftaar organised by Kumar as mere tokenism, stating that his government's indifference towards Muslim concerns makes such events meaningless.

There has been no immediate comment from Kumar or his party, JDU, regarding this development. The JDU has traditionally relied on Muslim votes by promoting Kumar's secular image. Currently, the party shares power with the BJP both at the Centre and in Bihar, where assembly elections are expected later this year.

Political Implications

The Imarat Shariah's decision highlights growing discontent among some Muslim groups with Kumar's policies. Their refusal to attend the Iftaar underscores tensions over issues affecting the community. The Waqf Bill is seen as a threat to Muslims' economic and educational progress by these groups.

This situation could have political ramifications for Kumar and his party as they prepare for upcoming elections. The JDU's reliance on Muslim votes may be tested if dissatisfaction within the community continues to grow.

Kumar's alliance with the BJP and support for controversial legislation might affect his secular image. As assembly polls approach, how this issue unfolds could influence voter sentiment in Bihar.
