Army to build Elphinstone road station foot-over-bridge

The Indian Army would be constructing a new temporary foot over-bridge (FOB) that connects Elphinstone and Parel stations. The new bridge will be constructed by the military's engineering wing, and will be ready for use by end of February 2018.

Last month, a stampede at the Elphinstone Road station had left 23 people dead.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Sitharaman visited the site of Elphinstone stampede exactly after a month of the tragedy.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis was also present at the site of Elphinstone stampede. Addressing media, Fadnavis said,''I want to thank Railway Minister and Defence Minister. After Elphinstone stampede incident had asked for help from armed forces. By 31st Jan the bridge will be built.''

The Indian Army has been requested to build a new foot over bridge after the Elphinstone stampede. Meanwhile, the Railway minister said that three stations footover bridge will be built by the army.

The Defence minister said,''Probably 1st time asked Army to come in to build what could otherwise be called civil work, but Elphinstone tragedy was so big.''

The incident had occurred on a railway foot overbridge on 29 September 2017 and it is considered the responsibility of the railway authorities to ensure the safety of its passengers entering and exiting station premises.

The investigation report after the tragedy held no one responsible but it was the result of criminal negligence of the authorities that so many people lost their lives. Watch the video to see this ground report.

The seven injured persons are Reshma Kadam, Navaj Shrivastava, Sheikh Wasim Nazir, Prahlad Kanojiya, Jyosna Rufukiya, Sunil Mishra and Asha Pimpale and they have claimed compensation of up to Rs 7 lakh each.
