Mumbai Rains: Red Alert Issued; Schools, Colleges To Remain Shut
Intense rainfall pounded various areas of Mumbai and its suburbs on Wednesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to raise the alert level from 'orange' to 'red' for the financial capital from Wednesday night until Thursday afternoon.
Mumbai experienced an average rainfall of 101.35 mm between 8 am and 10 pm on Wednesday, while the eastern suburbs and western suburbs recorded 87.54 mm and 102.55 mm of average rainfall, respectively, during the same period.

Due to the forecast of heavy rainfall for the metropolis, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for all government and private schools and colleges on July 27.
The BMC strongly urged all citizens to remain vigilant, stay indoors, and follow instructions from the administration.
"In light of this situation and prioritizing the safety of students, the Municipal Commissioner and Administrator, Dr. Iqbal Singh Chahal, has announced a holiday for all Municipal, Government, and Private primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools, as well as all colleges in Mumbai City and Suburbs on Thursday, July 27, 2023," stated the IMD in a tweet.
The heavy downpour disrupted traffic movement in the city, although train services were reported to be running on schedule.
Meanwhile, Mumbai University took precautionary measures and canceled all exams scheduled for that day.
"The Head, University Departments, Director, Institute of Distance Learning, Director, Ratnagiri, Thane & Kalyan Sub Centre, and the Principals of all affiliated Colleges in every Faculty concerned are hereby informed that all examinations scheduled for tomorrow, dated July 27, 2023, are postponed due to heavy rain, and the new dates will be announced later," read a circular issued by the University of Mumbai Board of Examination and Evaluation on Wednesday.
