Mumbai Property Tax Hike Halted, Job Fairs to Bring 2 Lakh Jobs
Mumbai residents rejoice as the Maharashtra cabinet votes to maintain the current property tax rates, preventing an additional financial burden of Rs 736 crore. Simultaneously, the state announces plans to hold job fairs in various regions, aiming to generate at least two lakh employment opportunities.
In a significant move that will provide relief to Mumbai residents, the Maharashtra cabinet, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has decided not to increase property taxes in the city. This decision comes as a welcome respite for citizens amidst the upcoming civic polls, which have been pending since 2022. The cabinet's decision was made during a weekly meeting held on Monday, February 5, 2023.

Property Tax Freeze Saves Mumbai Residents from Financial Burden
The proposal to maintain the status quo on property tax was put forward by the urban development department and received unanimous approval from the cabinet. This decision is expected to save Mumbai residents from an additional financial burden of approximately Rs 736 crore. While the official statement did not provide further details, it is clear that this move will bring relief to many homeowners and businesses in the city.
Namo Mega Job Fairs to Generate Employment Opportunities
In another significant decision, the cabinet approved the organization of employment fairs across various regions of Maharashtra. These fairs, titled the Namo Mega Job Fair, aim to address unemployment and generate job opportunities for individuals. The first such fair was successfully held in Nagpur and received an overwhelming response. The cabinet has now sanctioned the開催 of six more fairs, with an estimated generation of at least two lakh jobs. An expenditure of Rs 30 crore has been approved to facilitate the organization of these events.
Chief Minister Vayoshri Scheme for Senior Citizens
The cabinet also gave its nod to the launch of the Chief Minister Vayoshri Scheme, an initiative aimed at promoting the well-being of senior citizens. Under this scheme, dedicated centers for mental well-being and yoga therapy will be established to cater to the needs of senior citizens above the age of 65. It is estimated that approximately 15 lakh senior citizens will benefit from this scheme.
Urban Renewal Mission Extended and Expanded
The cabinet further approved the extension of the Urban Renewal Mission till March 2030. This mission, initially implemented by separate government departments, has now been expanded to include all municipal councils and nagar parishads. The aim is to streamline the execution of various projects, including the construction of railway overbridges, land acquisition for national highways, and sewage treatment schemes.
Encouraging Bamboo Cultivation and Honey Bee Farming
In a bid to promote sustainable agriculture, the cabinet cleared a proposal to encourage farmers to take up bamboo cultivation. Under this initiative, farmers will receive a subsidy of Rs 175 per sapling for a period of three years. Additionally, the industry department's proposal to support villagers in honey bee farming was approved. The state will provide 80% funding for the procurement of honey bee boxes, with the remaining cost to be borne by the beneficiaries.
Leopard Safari Project and Tourism Development
The cabinet also gave its consent to the development of a leopard safari project in Junnar tehsil of Pune district. The detailed project report has been approved by the Central Zoo Authority, and a budget of Rs 80.43 crore has been allocated for this initiative. Junnar, known for its historical significance, including Shivneri fort and ancient trade routes, is set to become the first tourism tehsil in the state.
Expansion of Shirdi Airport and Lift Irrigation Scheme
The cabinet approved a significant investment of Rs 876.25 crore for the expansion of Shirdi airport. This project includes land acquisition, rehabilitation of affected individuals, expansion of the airstrip, and soil testing. Furthermore, the water resources department's proposal for a Rs 883.78 crore lift irrigation scheme for Sangola tehsil in Solapur district was also approved. This project aims to irrigate over 13,000 hectares of land by lifting water from the Neera river.
The Maharashtra cabinet's decisions reflect a commitment to addressing key issues affecting citizens across the state. From property tax relief to job creation, senior citizen welfare, and infrastructure development, these initiatives aim to improve the quality of life for residents and boost economic growth in Maharashtra.
