Mumbai Policeman Faces Suspension for Assault on Cab Driver Near CSMT Station
A cab driver working for an aggregator service was allegedly attacked by a policeman with a fibre stick outside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in South Mumbai, an official reported on Friday. The incident, which resulted in injuries to the driver and the suspension of the policeman, took place early Thursday morning at a traffic signal near the CSMT station. A video of the assault has been circulating on social media.

The victim, Maroof Ahmed Khan, 22, who lives in Shivaji Nagar, was waiting for passengers near the CSMT station when the incident occurred. Head Constable Rupesh Manik Randive approached Khan and questioned him about his parked car. Following an argument, Randive began beating Khan with his fibre stick, according to the official.
Policeman Suspended Following Assault
The accused head constable is attached to the Motor Transport (MT) department of the Mumbai police. After the assault, he was suspended from duty. Khan was subsequently taken to a state-run hospital for treatment of his injuries. The cab aggregator company filed a complaint against the policeman at the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Marg Police Station on Friday evening.
The police are currently investigating the incident. An official stated that they are looking into all aspects of the case to determine what led to the altercation and subsequent assault.
The video showing the attack has sparked outrage on social media platforms, with many users condemning the actions of the policeman. The footage shows Khan being struck multiple times with a fibre stick while he tries to shield himself.
Public Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
Public reaction to the video has been swift, with many calling for stricter action against law enforcement officers who misuse their power. The incident has raised concerns about police behaviour and accountability in Mumbai.
Authorities have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure justice is served. They have also stated that any misconduct by police officers will not be tolerated and will be dealt with severely.
The cab driver’s ordeal has highlighted issues faced by drivers working for aggregator services, who often find themselves in vulnerable situations while waiting for passengers. This incident underscores the need for better protection and support for these workers.
The investigation continues as officials gather more evidence and statements from witnesses. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for police conduct and public trust in law enforcement in Mumbai.
The situation remains under close scrutiny as authorities work to resolve the matter and ensure such incidents do not recur in the future.
