Mumbai's Grand Welcome for Lord Ganesh

On Tuesday, Mumbai welcomed the annual homecoming of Lord Ganesha with much fanfare. The 10-day long festival saw idols of the deity in various shapes and sizes installed at households and community pandals. Themes ranged from Chandrayaan-3 launch to Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir. The city was abuzz with chants of 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' as families brought their beloved deity home.

The city of Mumbai, India's financial capital and cultural hotspot, was immersed in a sea of devotion on Tuesday as it celebrated the annual homecoming of Lord Ganesh. The event witnesses idols of Lord Ganesh, recognisable by his elephant head, being installed in various shapes and sizes at several households and community stages known as pandals.

These pandals are temporary stages set up by community groups at street corners and open spaces against an array of elaborate decorations based on myriad themes. This year’s themes ranged from the Chandrayaan-3 launch to Ayodhya's Ram Mandir - reflecting not just religious fervour but also current events and popular culture.

A City-wide Celebration

Families including children as well as senior citizens were seen stepping out early morning to bring their beloved 'bappa' home amid chants of "Ganpati Bappa Morya" resonating through the streets accompanied by rhythmic drumbeats. The sight was a testament to the city's shared love for this festival transcending age barriers. Many people were seen carrying idols of Lord Ganesh using various modes of transport such as autorickshaws, cars, amongst others.

Celebrities Joining in Festivities

Several politicians and celebrities from Bollywood also partake in this celebration installing idols of the deity symbolising wisdom and knowledge in their homes annually. While many famous Lord Ganesh idols were installed in pandals during early morning hours across Mumbai including those at Lalbaugcha Raja - one among the most famous ones; many other idols were brought out from workshops to these pandals in colourful processions.

Public Participation

A total of 2729 sarvajanik Ganeshotsav mandals have been permitted to organise public Ganesh festivities by erecting pandals, indicating the scale and popularity of this event. This demonstrates the city's commitment towards ensuring that everyone gets a chance to participate in these celebrations while also maintaining a balance with civic regulations.
